What is Evil?

Usage Notes: stands for "whatever is evil in character, base," in distinction (wherever the distinction is observable) from poneros (see No. 2), which indicates "what is evil in influence and effect, malignant." Kakos is the wider term and often covers the meaning of poneros. Kakos is antithetic to kalos, "fair, advisable, good in character," and to agathos, "beneficial, useful, good in act;" hence it denotes what is useless, incapable, bad; poneros is essentially antithetic to chrestos, "kind, gracious, serviceable;" hence it denotes what is destructive, injurious, evil. As evidence that poneros and kakos have much in comon, though still not interchangeable, each is used of thoughts, cp. matt. 15:19 with Mark 7:21; of speech, matt. 5:11 with 1Pet. 3:10; of actions, 2Tim. 4:18 with 1Thess. 5:15; of man, matt. 18:32 with matt. 24:48.

The word is used in the nominative case in Mt. 6:13. This usually denotes a title in the Greek. Hence Christ is saying, deliver us from "The Evil", and is probably referring to Satan.

Hebrew Word: to'ebah

Usage Notes: "abomination; loathsome, detestable thing." Cognates of this word appear only in Phoenician and Targumic Aramaic. The word appears 117 times and in all periods.

First, to'ebah defines something or someone as essentially unique in the sense of being "dangerous," "sinister," and "repulsive" to another individual. This meaning appears in Gen. 43:32 (the first occurrence): " ... The Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians." To the Egyptians, eating bread with foreigners was repulsive because of their cultural or social differences (cf. Gen. 46:34; Psa. 88:8). Another clear illustration of this essential clash of disposition appears in Prov. 29:27: "An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked." When used with reference to God, this nuance of the word describes people, things, acts, relationships, and characteristics that are "detestable" to Him because they are contrary to His nature. Things related to death and idolatry are loathsome to God: "Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing" (Deut. 14:3). People with habits loathsome to God are themselves detestable to Him: "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God" (Deut. 22:5). Directly opposed to to'ebah are such reactions as "delight" and "loveth" (Prov. 15:8-9).

Second, to'ebah is used in some contexts to describe pagan practices and objects: "The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire; thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God. Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house ... " (Deut. 7:25-26). In other contexts, to'ebah describes the repeated failures to observe divine regulations: "Because ye multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you; ... because of all thine abominations" (Ezek. 5:7, 9). To'ebah may represent the pagan cultic practices themselves, as in Deut. 12:31, or the people who perpetrate such practices: "For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee" (Deut. 18:12). If Israelites are guilty of such idolatry, however, their fate will be worse than exile: death by stoning (Deut. 17:2-5).

Third, to'ebah is used in the sphere of jurisprudence and of family or tribal relationships. Certain acts or characteristics are destructive of societal and familial harmony; both such things and the people who do them are described by to'ebah: "These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ... a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, ... and he that soweth discord among brethren" (Prov. 6:16-19). God says, "The scorner is an abomination to men" (Prov. 24:9) because he spreads his bitterness among God's people, disrupting unity and harmony.

Usage Notes: to abhor, treat as abhorrent, cause to be an abomination, act abominably." This verb occurs 21 times, and the first occurrence is in Deut. 7:26: "Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house...."

So when we look at the word abomination we can see the word evil, here are two examples:

12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath comitted abomination,

So if abomination is also evil, then what is seen as an abomination of desolation is the evil in a person that is desolate. What makes someone desolate is the lack of God's Spirit.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Wicked or evil be revealed. In the transliterated it states "Out of the midst of will come the wicked one. Leading one to believe that out of those who are of or appear to be of the body of Christ one shall come that is the anti-christ...

When we are raptured there will be those who believe it was not rapture that took us. Their thinking will be if it was rapture they to would of been taken, so it could not be rapture. And to insure this the evil one (anti-christ) if he is of those who appeared to be of the Body of Christ and he is well known. Say a t.v. evangelist or preacher and he also states the same as those left behind it will just reinforce that wrong belief.

Shocked that the anti-christ could be one of us, think about it, we know he sets up a false church and a world church, who better than one who appeared as us.

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

What brought wrath on the earth the last time on a global basis was man continually with thoughts that were evil. Look at the times, how much of man today is more and more of evil.

5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

So what is evil?

Evil is that which is not of God, what is of God?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

So all that is the opposite of the fruit of the Spirit is evil.

How can people kill as they do today? How can children kill children, men destroy like in the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma two years ago taking babies, children, women and men. Or like in Ireland where for 30 years bombs have killed innocents. And the same goes for almost every part of the world in the name of religion mostly and freedom. But when religion or freedom requires the taking of life's of children, babies, and women then it is evil.

And those involved are of evil. But it does not stop here, when someone bombs a abortion clinic to save and it kills then the one bombing becomes more evil than the one doing the abortion.

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Revenge is not ours, and violence never answered any anything. Name one time Jesus used violence, I mean He hurt anyone. Of course He over turned tables in the temple, but He did not use violence to hurt and He was not violent as much as He was indigent with those there.

Evil starts as a thought, and if you do not cast it down it grows and grows until it over flows out of you and becomes an act.

Just a thought of say when someone cuts you off on the road while driving can lead to a lot worse over time. At first you get mad at the other driver, may even call him/her names. Then as you let it fester in you, you may speed up to give them a dirty look, and then that may not be good enough you may speed up to get in front of them and slow down. At this point that simple thought has placed you in danger, the person behind you now may not slow down in time and rear end you, and you and any one else in the car could be injured or killed.

And all the time the person may never of seen you when they cut you off, you may have been in their blind spot. Or they may have an emergency, they may be taking a sick child to the hospital or a pregnant wife to the hospital.

And this is just one of many examples I could use. But no matter the thought was evil and the action was evil.

The new fade around in wearing apparel is WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) is what we should ask any time we are not operating in total love in any and all acts.

The whole purpose of evil is to drag us down to Hell. To defeat us and all we come in contact with. Evil is just a tool of Satan and what he is.

You can cast down all thoughts, and should do so, but those who do not know God and are desolate allow the evil to grow and fester until it controls them and they do acts so violent that we are repulsed and sickened by like the bombing in Oklahoma or the bombings in Israel malls, or children killing each other.

So why is it getting worse?

A break down in the family, a lack or lose of values and morals.

50 years ago t.v. starting airing and within 15 years the t.v. was used to send news about Vietnam to our homes right at the family dinner time. And since so many new someone in Vietnam all watched the news for two hours, destroying what had been a time for the family to sit, eat and talk. And after all the news something was needed to take away the reality of Vietnam so the t.v. was used to escape taking away time visiting family, neighbors, and friends. Isolating us in our neighborhoods, homes and with our families. Then add VCR's, electronic games, more violence in t.v., cartoons, movies, games. The average child today by 18 sees 70,000 acts of violence where 50 years ago an 18 year old may have seen one unless they were in a war.

Next add the fact that it took both parents working to support the family or the families broke up, and now there is no one at home to watch, guide and help the child grow and we have had 35 years of this so why shouldn't there be more evil. We have allowed it, in our homes, in our families, in our life's.

Oh yes it is just a movie, but what you allow in also comes out. Think of a child who is raised by t.v., Nintendo, and movies all portraying life as cheap and not worth anything and then ask the question.

We spend more energy and time finding out about the person who will baby sit our children for 5 hours than we do who wrote the programs or movies we let them be influenced by for hours and even days, and months at a time.

No t.v., movies, and games are not evil, just as guns do not kill. But those who program and write the shows may be evil as some people use guns to kill. Don't get me wrong I am not for or against gun control. I am for education of guns and locking them up to be secure so children can not get them so I am for responsibility.

But like with anything, if used in the wrong way it can become evil. A car is a great asset and resource, but when someone drinks and drives it becomes deadly. Or a boat, jet ski's, bows and arrows and so on, anything can be used for evil or good.

We start removing evil by casting down thoughts and praying for ourselves, our family, our neighbors, our country and our world. But it has to start with you, no one else can do it for you. No, it may not remove all evil from the earth, but if each of us starts showing the love of God and not the evil of Satan we can make a difference.
