Before you read this study understand that we do not teach, we share and then ask all who read the following take it to God and verify it with Him. We believe a lot of the world is misled by the church of the world and religion vs the one true church. And to know the truth can only come from knowing, not just knowing of God, John 14:26, I John 2:27, Rev 3:19-22.
Many are called but few are chosen because many are misled by false teachers Matthew 7:13-15 so we help all who wants to know the truth how to find and know the truth of and by God and not of and by man.

Tithe is Pre and Post Law

Pastor J. R. Wilhite, author   Close Window

Many people make up all kinds of excuses that they should not, to justify not tithing or where to tithe. What makes the tithe unique is that it is not like the rest of God's commandments and the law starting in Exodus. Tithing started a long time before Moses with Cain and Abel and then with Abraham. It was not commanded by God to do, but Abraham did it anyway.

Genesis 4

2. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

4. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7. If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

The tithe was one of the first ways to show our faith in and love of God. Cain gave but not of his best and his heart was not right with it.

Genesis 14

18. And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

19. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

20. And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Melchizedek was king and priest of God of Salem (precursor of Jerusalem) and Abraham tithed to him hundreds of years before Moses talked about the tithe. Jesus was of The Order of Melchizedek as well.

Hebrews 5

5. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

6. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

8. Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

10. Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Below you will see that in Greek the name Melchizedek was spelt the same as in Genesis. Why the translators changed it is unkown but it proves that the order of Melchizedek to which Jesus belonged is the same as that to which Abraham tithed.

The first mention of the tithe after the one in Genesis is in Leviticus 27.

Leviticus 27

30. And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord.

31. And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

32. And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.

33. He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.

34. These are the commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.

Below are some more verses on the tithe during the period of Moses and the beginning of the law.

Numbers 18

24. But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the Lord, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

25. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

26. Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the Lord, even a tenth part of the tithe.

27. And this your heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshing floor, and as the fulness of the winepress.

28. Thus ye also shall offer an heave offering unto the Lord of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the Lord's heave offering to Aaron the priest.

29. Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave offering of the Lord, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it.

Genesis is pre-law. It relates creation, flood, and promises between God and Mankind then Abraham. There were two covenants with mankind: one being the rainbow as proof that God will never use water to destroy all of mankind again; the other one being circumcision of those of God as a promise of God to those who were circumcised.

The point is, if we are of Christ, we are the seed of Abraham (the father of faith) who tithed to Melchizedek. Since Jesus is the Priest of that order, it means the tithe is as much part of the new as it was of the old. Since there is no mention of God’s commanding or even suggesting that Abraham tithe to anyone, and Abraham is the father of faith, then it is of us as well. It is not a command or law, but a way of showing our faith in God. How is it that everyone forgets that we, being of Christ, are heirs to the promises of Abraham only when it requires something of us?

Galatians 3

29. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

You have a choice - learn about the tithe; get it in your heart that the tithe is not taking from you but adding unto you. It is not taking the first 10% to leave you with 90%, but giving God what is His and the rest is yours. The remainder is actually 100%. The alternative is to continue doing as the world dictates and never benefit from what God promises.

Malachi 3

6. For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Hebrews 13

8. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Malachi 3

7. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

8. Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

9. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

11. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

12. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.

The tithe requires faith to work - faith in God and faith in the tithe. Some say that they do not need to tithe, that they are ok without it, but if you study the sower of the word in Mark 4 you will notice what is missing for the three that do not get the 100% is someone to rebuke the devourer. The devourer comes and steals the seed so the first three never get the 100%. No matter whether or not you believe, there is a spiritual and physical side to the tithe. The physical is that those who tithe to good ground for the right reasons will no longer live paycheck to paycheck but have more. Spiritually they will grow because, through the tithe, God will be allowed to rebuke the devourer of their seed. This is the only area where God allows you to test Him. It takes time and requires patience and faith, but it does work.

Yes, you could justify anything to work to your needs and to make you feel good about what you do or how you live, but that would not be the truth. You would only be deceiving yourself.

Matthew 7

21. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Hosea 4

6. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

You are a priest if you are of Christ.

Revelation 1

6. And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Some preachers teach that we are to tithe to the church we attend, to the poor, the charity of your choice, or where we are fed. All are wrong. The tithe goes where God directs it. For those who are not sure and are not hearing from God yet, you can tithe to the place where you learned how to have a relationship with God, to hear from Him, and where you actually grow. That is until you hear from God and if He directs you elsewhere.

Why does the tithe not work? The only three reasons the tithe will not work are:

  1. You do not tithe the full 10% - Some tithe off their net or their gross paycheck, but this is still not the tithe. If what you tithe is off by one cent then it is not the full tithe. What ever your employer pays for you that you would have to pay if you were self employed needs to be added to your gross and then tithe (10%) of that. In most cases we are only talking about a few dollars. Not enough to hurt you in the pocket book but enough for Satan (the accuser) to use against you.
  2. You do not tithe to the right place - into good ground. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to hear from God, and test the spirit you are hearing from to be sure it is God. (John 14:26 and I John 4:1-3)
  3. You do it for the wrong reason - mostly you do it because you feel you have to and do it begrudgingly, instead of with joy, peace and love.

If you believe what God says about the tithe then you should tithe with joy and excitement that you know what you are tithing is going to allow you to see God at work in your life and bless you. Tithing in good ground is hard to understand and do if you are not listening to God. The tithe is meant to make sure there is meat in His house. The tithe of the old was to take care of the priests, but of the new is to supply the needs of those who are teaching the truth and Spirit. Mainly those who are teaching others to listen to God, not man, and how to do so.

The tithe is up to you, not you and me, not you and any other pastor, but between you and God. But if you do not believe in God or His word on this topic, then how many other of God’s topics do you not believe?

I have not met a single soul yet who tithed (the full tithe, happily, for the right reason, in the good ground) that that did not realize increase above and beyond what they tithed within no more than 6 months.

God Bless You as you hear His words and follow His leading.
