Does God Create Evil?

Pastor J. R. Wilhite, author   Close Window

The following verses have been taken wrong by so many down through the ages. I thought I would help make them clear.

We must remember that in Hebrew many words have multiple meanings, just as in they do in English. The early translators had the right words, but their usage was different than ours is today.

IS 45:6. That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.

  1. I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

First of all if you look at the meaning of the words in verse 7 "form" means:

"Forming"

Strong's Ref. # 3335

Romanized yatsar

Pronounced yaw-tsar'

probably identical with HSN3334 (through the squeezing into shape); ([compare HSN3331]); to mould into a form; especially as a potter; figuratively, to determine (i.e. form a resolution):

KJV--X earthen, fashion, form, frame, make(-r), potter, purpose.

So forming is to fashion, make from nothing.

Strong's Ref. # 216

Romanized 'owr

Pronounced ore

from HSN0215; illumination or (concrete) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.):

KJV--bright, clear, + day, light (-ning), morning, sun.

Light is to illuminate, to bring things clear, into vision.

Strong's Ref. # 1254

Romanized bara'

Pronounced baw-raw'

a primitive root; (absolutely) to create; (qualified) to cut down (a wood), select, feed (as formative processes):

KJV--choose, create (creator), cut down, dispatch, do, make (fat).

Here "creating", should have been translated as "cut down".

Strong's Ref. # 2822

Romanized choshek

Pronounced kho-shek'

from HSN2821; the dark; hence (literally) darkness; figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness:

KJV--dark(-ness), night, obscurity

"darkness" is "misery, destruction, evil".

So the first part of IS 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness." would be, "I (God) form the illumination needed (to see and understand) and cut down the evil (wickedness).

"Making" means "accomplish, advance to become, or bear".

Strong's Ref. # 6213

Romanized `asah

Pronounced aw-saw'

a primitive root; to do or make, in the broadest sense and widest application (as follows):

KJV--accomplish, advance, appoint, apt, be at, become, bear, bestow, bring forth, bruise, be busy, X certainly, have the charge of, comit, deal (with), deck, + displease, do, (ready) dress(-ed), (put in) execute(-ion), exercise, fashion, + feast, [fight-]ing man, + finish, fit, fly, follow, fulfill, furnish, gather, get, go about, govern, grant, great, + hinder, hold ([a feast]), X indeed, + be industrious, + journey, keep, labour, maintain, make, be meet, observe, be occupied, offer, + officer, pare, bring (come) to pass, perform, pracise, prepare, procure, provide, put, requite, X sacrifice, serve, set, shew, X sin, spend, X surely, take, X thoroughly, trim, X very, + vex, be [warr-]ior, work(-man), yield, use

"Peace" means "favor, health, prosperity, peace".

Strong's Ref. # 7965

Romanized shalowm

Pronounced shaw-lome'

or shalom {shaw-lome'}; from HSN7999; safe, i.e. (figuratively) well, happy, friendly; also (abstractly) welfare, i.e. health, prosperity, peace:

KJV--X do, familiar, X fare, favour, + friend, X great, (good) health, (X perfect, such as be at) peace(-able, -ably), prosper(-ity, -ous), rest, safe(-ty), salute, welfare, (X all is, be) well, X wholly.

"Trouble" means "adversity, affliction, bad, calamity".

Strong's Ref. # 7451

Romanized ra`

Pronounced rah

from HSN7489; bad or (as noun) evil (natural or moral):

KJV--adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, + displease(-ure), distress, evil([-favouredness], man, thing), + exceedingly, X great, grief(-vous), harm, heavy, hurt(-ful), ill (favoured), + Mark, mischief(-vous), misery, naught(-ty), noisome, + not please, sad(-ly), sore, sorrow, trouble, vex, wicked(-ly, -ness, one), worse(-st), wretchedness, wrong. [Including feminine raaah; as adjective or noun.].

IS 45:7B "I (God) create your favor with me, prosperity, health and cut down the adversity, affliction, bad, calamity (in your life): I the Lord do all these things.

I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

Now let's see them together.

IS 45:7 "I (God) form the illumination needed (to see and understand) and cut down the evil (wickedness). I (God) create your favor with me, prosperity, health and cut down the adversity, affliction, bad, calamity (in your life): I the Lord do all these things.

I hope this clears it up for those who thought God created evil, trouble, and problems. He is not the problem; He is the answer.

Here are two verses from the Literal I used for this study.

IS 45:6.

|0000| that

|3045| they may know

|4217| from the rising of

|8121| the sun

|4628| and to the sunset

|0657| that none {is}

|1115| besides Me.

|0589| I {am}

|3068| Yahweh

|3808| and none

|5750| anymore!

7.

|3335| Forming

|0216| light

|1254| and creating

|2822| darkness.

|6213| Making

|7965| peace

|1254| and creating

|7451| trouble;

|0589| I,

|3068| Yahweh,

|6213| do

|3605| all

|0428| these things.

Remember when something bad happens in your life, God did not do it. He said that He gives you what ever is needed to UN-do the evil.

IS 45:7 "I (God) form the illumination needed (to see and understand) and cut down the evil (wickedness). I (God) create your favor with me, prosperity, health, and cut down the adversity, affliction, bad, calamity (in your life): I the Lord do all these things.

How you respond to His power in your life is up to you. I recomend that you use it to turn things around.

How do you get the Light of God, the knowledge, and wisdom of God? Ask for it. Go to the throne of God and make your requests of Him in prayer. Cultivate a relationship with Him, walk with Him, and He will be faithful to help you in every area of your life.
