Five Anecdotes

Whenever I'm disappointed with my spot in my life, I stop and think about little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying out for a part in a school play. His mother told me that he'd set his heart on being in it, though she feared he would not be chosen. On the day the parts were awarded, I went with her to collect him after school. Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and excitement. "Guess what Mum," he shouted, and then said those words that will remain a lesson to me: "I've been chosen to clap and cheer!"

  • On the street I saw a naked child, hungry and shivering in the cold. I became angry and said to God, "Why do you permit this? Why don't you do something?" For a while God said nothing. That night, he replied. He said, "I certainly did do something. I made you."

  • When you are sad
    I will dry your tears
    When you are scared
    I will comfort your fears
    When you are worried
    I will give you hope
    When you are confused
    I will help you cope
and when you are lost and can't see the light
I shall be your beacon shining ever so bright
    This is my oath
    I pledge till the end
Why you may ask because you're my friend

  • When You Are Lonely
And You need someone to talk to Remember that I'm always here for You
I will hug You when Your sad
I will be with You when You pray
I will laugh with You when You are happy
I will cry with You when You are unhappy
I will move the mountains so You could walk
I will shut everyone so You could talk
    I will dance with You
I will jump to the sky if I could
I do everything for You 'Cause You're my friend And I Love You

  • And they call some of these people "retarded"...

A few years ago, at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash.

At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry.

The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back.... every one of them.

One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story.

Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.
