A young parish priest was extremely nervous about speaking to his congregation. He asked his bishop for advice. The bishop told him to relax. "Try to grab their attention with the first lines out of your mouth, and then you'll have them for the rest of the sermon," he said. When asked for an example the bishop told the young minister about how he once said "the best years of my life were in the arms of a woman who wasn't my wife.....it was my mother."

The young minister nodded in understanding and when he stood to preach the next Sunday, he grabbed the pulpit and declared "the best years of my life were in the arms of a woman who isn't my wife..."

The looks on the faces of the congregation arrested his attention. He began to panic and suddenly lost all his nerve and said "and for the life of me, I can't remember who she was!" Pastor Rick Barker
