Why was there a tree of Good and Evil?
Pastor J. R. Wilhite
Why did God set a tree in the Garden of Eden (Knowledge of Good and Evil) and then tell Adam he could not eat its fruit?
To answer this question, we need to understand that this tree's fruit released a gene in us. This gene would release knowledge of Good and Evil.
This knowledge (without wisdom) was a time bomb. As Adam ate, the time was set for our ultimate destruction. God in his infinite wisdom would have allowed for us to eat of the fruit when we had the wisdom to handle the knowledge. Unfortunately, Adam ate of the fruit before he achieved wisdom, releasing the gene in himself that would then be passed down generation-to-generation through the seed of man. Adam sowed our destruction. To help you understand, imagine a child two years old crawling on the floor, and the parents leaving a loaded gun for him to play with. No child would have the wisdom to know what to do with a loaded gun, but may have the knowledge to pull the trigger. The knowledge of Good and Evil that Adam ate of was the same as the child on the floor with a loaded gun. The difference being was that Adam wasn't two. He was old enough to understand. In his disobedience, he sowed the seed of sin in our lives.
We still are not old enough, or mature enough, or wise enough to handle the tree of Good and Evil. All I know is, God placed the tree there not to tempt, but for the day when we would be mature enough to handle the fruit. Otherwise he wouldn't have put it there.
Jesus, being born of woman and the spirit, not of man, did not have this seed of sin. He did not have this gene released in him. As with any germ, there has to be an antibiotic, and that antibody is the blood of Jesus.
If you have a hard time understanding this, look at Hosea 4:6, where God says "My children are destroyed due to a lack of knowledge." If the tree and the fruit thereof was knowledge that Adam ate of, then why were we destroyed due to a lack of knowledge?
The reason is, we have the knowledge of Evil, and not Good. There are two different kinds of knowledge, Good and Evil. The world itself even states that knowledge is power and power corrupts. We know that God's power and God's knowledge do not corrupt. So what we must be missing is God's Knowledge. The Knowledge of Good. If we had God's Wisdom, we would understand to avoid the knowledge of Evil, and only operate under the knowledge of Good.
