And to pray unto the Lord is to ask:

And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.Jer 29:7 (KJV)
And when asking, He will hear and answer:

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.12
Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will heMarken unto you.Jer 29:11-12 (KJV)
To ask for Others:

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.Jer 37:3 (KJV)
To ask for those who are despiteful who are your enemies:

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;matt 5:44 (KJV)
How not to ask and How to ask:

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.6
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.7
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.8
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.9
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.10
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.11
Give us this day our daily bread.12
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.13
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.14
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:15
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.matt 6:5-15 (KJV)
When we ask in the name of Jesus, then Jesus ask for us, what chance is their that our request will be turned down when Jesus ask the Father?

At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:John 16:26 (KJV)
And when we do not know what to ask:

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.27
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.Romans 8:26-27 (KJV)

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.Romans 8:34 (KJV)

Pray is to ask, to have relationship is to listen.
When you are in a relationship it has to be two ways, talking and listening, and when Jesus said He would pray for us, it meant it was due to our relationship with Him, He would do this. So when you pray, also listen.
My prayer for you is that your relationship with God grows. Amen
