Sin Part I

Pastor Jerry Wilhite, author

Sin is what we do not need and should not want, but what we play with more than is healthy for our spiritual growth. God did not event sin. It was caused by man accepting the lies of Satan in the Garden of Eden and then throughout time it self.

Genesis 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

What sin was in Sodom and Gomorrah? Sexual desires and sexual imorality, homosexuality, sodomy, beastiality, sex outside of marriage.

Matthew 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

The reason this sin is unforgivable is that the only way to receive forgiveness is through the spirit. IE: If it is raining and you do not get under the umbrella and then get wet and curse the umbrella for you getting wet. Well, you are in the wrong not the umbrella, the same is here when you are dealing with the Holy Spirit. If you are under the umbrella you won't get wet and won't curse the umbrella. And if you are in the Spirit you won't curse the spirit.

Matthew 18:21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

Matthew 18:22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Don't you think Jesus knew what He was saying when He said 490 times? He meant to forgive all. He knew if Peter counted he would never reach 490 times because he would be spending all of his time counting and most likely loose track. If Jesus meant for Peter and us to forgive and forgive, don't you think He does the same for us?

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Jesus came so we could have a life connected back to the Father. What Adam disconnected, Jesus reconnected.

John 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

John 8:10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

John 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever comitteth sin is the servant of sin.

John 8:35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: [but] the Son abideth ever.

John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Romans 3:9 What then? are we better [than they]? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.

Law points out the sin in us. Like a sign that lets us know that a bridge is out, if there was no sign we would drive right off the bridge to our death. The law is the same. It let's us know that there is a problem in us and that is why we are disconnected from God and that we need to find a different path, like going around the bridge that is out. So Jesus came and gave us that path, by believing in Him and then following the path of the Holy Spirit we find a new path.

Romans 4:8 Blessed [is] the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Why have all sinned? It comes in the seed of man. In man was sin brought into this world and from his seed it is passed down to us. But there is a way out.

Romans 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

Romans 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Romans 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members [as] instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members [as] instruments of righteousness unto God.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

Romans 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

Romans 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things [is] death.

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? [Is] the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Romans 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the comandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin [was] dead.

Romans 7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the comandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Romans 7:10 And the comandment, which [was ordained] to life, I found [to be] unto death.

Romans 7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the comandment, deceived me, and by it slew [me].

Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law [is] holy, and the comandment holy, and just, and good.

Romans 7:13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the comandment might become exceeding sinful.

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Romans 7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

Romans 7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that [it is] good.

Romans 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

For the world and everything in it came into sin when Adam ate of the fruit. This was a sin because God told him not to do this, like a child you tell not to play with matches. But when he is old enough and learns how to use matches then it is ok. The same was for Adam, whether or not God had ever planned to allow Adam to eat of the fruit did not matter, what did matter was obedience. Again like the child, if you tell a child not to play with matches and then one day while you are not around he plays with matches, he gets burned and maybe even unto death. Adam was the same; he was told and he played with what he was warned not to play with and he got burned unto death. Since he was the first, he passed down this seed of sin that was now in him to us. Then Jesus came and removed the seed of sin and cleansed us with His blood.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Romans 8:10 And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness.

So sin entered, God pointed it out by the law and then sent Jesus to fix it.

Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because [he eateth] not of faith: for whatsoever [is] not of faith is sin.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that comitteth fornication sinneth against his own body.

1 Corinthians 8:12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak [this] to your shame.

1 Corinthians 15:56 The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

The only anger without sin is the anger against sin.

Hebrews 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Hebrews 10:6 In burnt offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

Hebrews 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Hebrews 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and [offering] for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure [therein]; which are offered by the law;

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Hebrews 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

Hebrews 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

James 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye comit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1 John 3:4 Whosoever comitteth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

1 John 3:8 He that comitteth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not comit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

1 John 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

The sin unto death is in:

Matthew 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Galatians 5:15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

Galatians 5:16 [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Galatians 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Galatians 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Galatians 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Galatians 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

What do anger, strife, offense, jealousy, and lust, bring? The first four bring the same as all other sin, but they start by eating away at us. When we get into anger, offense, strife or jealousy we start feeling empty or something inside starts growing and consuming us; that is sin and death.

When we get mad we feel this momentarily, but when it is strife, offense or jealousy it grows and grows until it consumes us whole and takes us down. That is why we are told to forgive because if we forgive we can not be in offense, strife, anger, or jealousy. True forgiveness is forgetting.

Lust, covetousness, and sexual imorality lead us into a different area, an area that consumes us in self-gratification. If something is of self, then it is not of God. That is what Adam did, he gave up God-centeredness for self-centeredness.

So sin is evil, of the flesh, and death. The opposite is grace and faith, of the spirit and goodness, and life eternal.

Evil is constantly battling goodness, as is the flesh battling the spirit. We make the choice which side we are on and which will win in our life. We are the soul in between the Spirit and the flesh, and which ever we follow or allow to rule us is the one which will win. We make the choice. Jesus shows us the way, but it is always our choice. Yes, we will fall and sin, but we get back up, ask forgiveness and accept it and go on; or we wallow in sin and allow it to take over.

Jesus will set you free of all sins, pornography, smoking, drinking, drugs, judging, gossip, etc...but you have to ask Him into your life, and then ask Him to take them away, and let Him have them. Do not play with them. If the temptation comes on you, just go to Him and ask Him for help.

My prayer for you is that you will sin less and less as the days go by. Amen

If you read Malachi 3:10-12 and then Mark 4:12-18 you will see where the tithe can and will increase your knowledge of the word and of God. The tithe is more than just giving 10% to a church, it is a way for God to have authority in your life over all that matters, your income, your growth, even relationships. Out of about 20 people I have known for the past 10+ years only 5 tithed. The 5 of the 20 that tithed have increased in every area of their life. Where the other 15 have increased some, they are still light years behind the 5 who tithed in all areas. It is your choice, but do not tithe until you understand the tithe and what it does for you and do it from the heart and not the head.
