Tradition

Tradition is one of the most dangerous things to a Christian. I hear Christians say Halloween, Christmas (with Santa), Easter (with candy) are all traditions of Christians.
I beg to differ, Santa has only been around a short time and became big in the 1920's for retail. Easter and candy and easter bunny and so forth are only of the past 100 years, and halloween is also of this time period. So for thousands of years we did not have the Easter Bunny, Santa, or Halloween.
That is not the main point. We take all that is traditional and consider it OK as long as the church does it, even if the church is wrong.
The idea of becoming a Christian is becoming new in Christ, a new being, not traditional but new.
We hold traditions to be sacred. Some traditions are OK, family get togethers for different things like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Reunions and so forth are great.
Traditionally church is Sunday morning. That is a bad tradition; church should be every day. We should hold God close 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, not 1 or 2 hours a day once, or twice a week.
Some Christians are called C & E-ers, which means they only attend church either or both Christmas and Easter each year.
So what is wrong with Santa? If the tradition of Christmas revolves around anyone other than Jesus it is wrong.
Easter is the same. As long as we teach Easter as the death, and resurrection of Jesus, it is OK. But when the Easter bunny and candy are the main things and children only know Easter for this or Christmas for Santa, what good are we doing when we promote those who do not exist Vs those who do?
There are a lot of Christians who go to church and can recite all the different liturgy from memory, but ask them what it all means or why, and they fumble over their own words.
Church is not to be repetitious; it is to be up lifting, educating, a place to share the glory of God and all of His blessings. This can only be done if we spend time with God on a daily basis Vs a once a week basis.
Traditions have become the excuse or justification for too many, and by allowing it we are more guilty than they.

Matthew 5
The law was given to point out sin in our life. Jesus came to give us a way to be cleansed of sin. So, to be of tradition and the law or someone who is legalistic then they make Jesus' death to have been in vain.
We are not to judge or be legalistic, and I only state what is in this Bible study to help those who may be leaning too far one way or the other.
We should celebrate Christmas and Easter, and doing it right is what it is all about. If you want the Easter Bunny and Santa as part of your life, then make sure the truth of each day is well understood and celebrated first.
The truth is that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus and His love and God's love for us and the love we should be showing to all. Easter is His death and resurrection and what it means to us. Again, this deals with God's love for us.
God Bless You as you hear His words and follow His leading.
