Words

Pastor J. R. Wilhite, author   Close Window

"Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me." What a lie, like so many others we are told growing up, no wonder we have trouble believing the truth. Words can be the most harmful thing even more so than stick and stones. Damage cause by sticks and stones can heal in time. Where damage caused by words may never heal. We are hurt by terrible things people say about us, or a parent who belittles us, or treats us like morons. Or a spouse who yells, and causes a lot, all of this is painful and can damage more, and deeper and for a longer period than any thing stick or stone may do.

Before I get any deeper into words, let's review some things we have been told in our youth that hurts us as adults in believing.

  1. Santa Claus, we are told that there is a man who knows when we are good or not. Sort of like God. And that he works one night a year and can deliver presents to all the children in the world. And that he uses magic rain deer to do this. So what is the problem? Well, if we grow up believing in Santa whom we can see to find out it is not true and we are told this by our parents (who are not telling the truth) we then have trouble believing the things we can not see like God. But look at a few other facts about Santa. Santa also can spell Satan if you move the n over a few spaces. Claus is also a law or a form of law, so we have Satan's Law. Then what is Santa used for? To promote retail sales, to have us spend our money that we could use in other ways to help retailers out. And the list can go on and on, but that is enough for now.
  2. How about the tooth fairy? As children we are led to believe that this fairy comes and replaces our tooth with money. A fairy is a myth based on magic. Another lie our parents tell us and then want us to always tell the truth.
  3. And the Easter Bunny that the EB comes on Easter and brings candy and hides died eggs. Another lie, and this one is to change what we should be focused on, on Easter. It takes our focus off Christ and places it on a lie and again supporting retail sales.
  4. Halloween, oh it is just kids dressing up and getting candy, what can be so bad? Well, how about the fact we are telling kids it is ok to be violent with some of the costumes they were, or that Satan, evil and so forth are not so bad. This one I could write a book on, but let's just say again it is a lie from our parents to support retail sales.

There are more, but you should be getting the idea. In 1948 (May 15th) the Supreme Court ruled on separation of church and state. Israel was recognized by the U.N. as a nation, and the first national broadcasting company starting broadcasting television.

That's right 3 major happenings in the same year, and about 15-20 years later, the government is enforcing separation of church and state by kicking the Bible and prayer out of schools. Television is slowing dividing us, separating us from each other, our neighbors and more. And Israel starts fighting for its land.

Let's start with schools, in 1963 schools started putting a halt to prayer and Bible studies in schools. In the 30 + years since, more kids are killing kids and younger each year. The national debt, which never existed before, grows to over 5 trillion dollars. And we have killed over 30 million children in abortion. God only knows how many we have killed that could have cured cancer, aids, and other illness, and how many would or could have been leaders. And the list could be pages long of what these 30 million children could have been. I wonder how many are for abortion would have been for it, if it had been available for their parents. Who knows most of them that were for it, may not of been here at all. And you know what, even thou they are for abortion that would have been a loss and a shame also.

I do not support abortion or execution, any form of killing is wrong. If someone does wrong lock him or her up. But for the most part find out why they are doing wrong and let's correct the problem.

And here again an area that could take pages listing what all could be different.

Television is a tool in the hands of good it is good, and not it is not. In the 60's the Vietnam War was heating up as television was growing. Television started showing the news about 5PM to 7PM. And since a large percentage of people in our country had a relative or a friend or knew of someone in Vietnam, the news became a vital part of our life. We were able to see what was happening in Nam almost as it happened. So we all sat around the t.v. From 5 – PM and there went the family hour, and of course afterwards we needed something to get us away from the horror of Nam, so t.v. Just so happened to supply us with hours of comedy and escapism.

Since Vietnam lasted from 1964 – 1974 we got so used to the t.v. That our family time went to pot, we no longer talked to each other except in comercials and that for the most part was to get a drink or a bathroom break. And as far as our neighbors well we over the years grew further and further apart. Where it used to be that people visited each other daily and sat on their front porch and talked to others who walked by or had a neighbor over, we became more and more isolated.

And again this area could take pages to cover, but look at the fact that the average child born after 1965 sees more than 70,000 acts of violence before they are 18 and are educated on sex at a much younger age, and are subjected to more addictive things like achol, cigarettes, drugs, etc. No wonder our children are as messed up as they are. No yours may not, but there are a lot out there who are.

When was the last time you turned off the t.v? And spent the evening on you're front porch or visiting a neighbor or even talking to your family. Try it for a week, turn the t.v. Off and see how you do.

What does all this have to do with words?

Our children are growing up with words, words from t.v., music, games, and radio and most of these words are not good. There are songs about cop killing, sex, drugs, and violence. Now a days with cable the average child at 6 can see it all by changing channels.

Think of a child raised in a home based on love with only words based in God and love. No television other than Christian, no radio other than Christian, no music other than Christian. Spending time talking, and reading the Bible. Now take the average child being raised on and by television and Nintendo.

Let's see what God has to say about words.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:1-3 (KJV)

Nothing was made, unless it was made with the word, spoken words created all.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:14 (KJV)

Jesus is the Word; the Word was used to bring us our salvation.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

John 3:16-21 (KJV)

How can a child raise with lies believe in Jesus? How can the child believe adults that there is a God who they can not see when those who they can turn out to be false.

34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 3:34-36 (KJV)

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 5:24 (KJV)

It starts with the word, and then believe in the word, and that brings everlasting life.

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever comitteth sin is the servant of sin.

35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

John 8:31-38 (KJV)

Continuing in the word creates disciples, and in the word is truth and the word that you know will bring that truth and that truth will set you free in that area of your life.

47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a comandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50 And I know that his comandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

John 12:47-50 (KJV)

We are judged by our words, and our words are prove of our belief.

3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

John 15:3 (KJV).

The word cleans us.

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

John 17:14 (KJV)

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

and sanctify them in God's truth

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

to glorify them, and all other believers with Him in heaven

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

John 17:14-20 (KJV)

So by the words we allow in we can be saved from eternal damnation, death, hell and the grave. Also the words in us and the words we speak judge us, and we are cleansed by the word.

The word brings salvation, and all was created by the Word. So why should we allow any words in that are not true? And why should we start our children off in life with lies and believing in things that are lies.

I have 4 children, my youngest never believed in Santa, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, or any of the other lies. She also has been raised not to celebrate Halloween. She is almost 11 years old and in comparison to our boys, who are 17, 18 and 19 who until they were 6,7, and 8 had all of this garbage, she is just as loving and more stable, and believes in God a lot more than even her brothers.

I hope this study of words will get you to evaluate your way of treating your children in regards to the lies and words you allow them to have and believe.
