History of H.O.M.E.:

Please understand that nothing I have done which is good or anything that has been a blessing to others is of me; it is of God. I can take no credit for anything other than listening and obedience.

In the early 1990's we were a Bible study group of about 30 that I, Pastor Jerry Wilhite, led. In 1993 we became H.O.M.E., and with a name like H.O.M.E. we felt we should minister to the homeless. Before this I was a Sunday school teacher for seniors in high school.

I felt I was to be a youth Pastor and boy was I wrong.

My wife had signed up to volunteer at a nursing home, so I went with her, but she decided it was not for her. However, in the next year I spent as much time as I could there, averaging 6 hours a day, Monday - Friday. After a year I then offered to provide full church services every Sunday. We did put on full services until the beginning of 2002 and then we went to the first Sunday of each month as well as Christmas day.

Sherrye and Jesse Fuentes loaded up their truck at about 9 am each Sunday and Christmas day, then drove over there, unloaded, set up the room and wheeled in the residents who required assitance. My wife, Barbara, and Sherrye & occasionally her Mom, Jane, sing. Jesse sings and plays keyboard.

So they start at 9 AM and by the time they get home and unload it is 2PM.

Ten years ago my daughter was 6, and my sons were 14, 13, and 10 years old. Imagine telling them that we would get up at 7 AM to open presents and eat and then get ready and load the 175 stuffed animals in the SUV and take them over and spend the next 3 hours at the Nursing Home. They were not thrilled to say the least the first time, but after the first time they have always looked forward to going as much if not more than the ladies do.

Understand that only about 12% of the residents get any visitors on Christmas and normally that is not until about 1 PM. So when we started with the service and giving them a very plush (has to be plush so if they roll over on it, it does not hurt them) stuffed animal they were overwhelmed in some cases.

Over the years I have seen many different ones in the rooms as I make in room visits. I have seen the residents hugging them as they leave this world. The stuffed animals represent hope, love, and God to them as they hug them. Remember that all of the animals came from God via us, and it reminds them of how hopeless Christmas was before, but not any more.
